Roses at Tepyac
Mural for Bishop Ward High School

This mural depicts the moment when Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to St. Juan Diego on Tepyac Hill. In this particular encounter, Mary gives Juan Diego castilian roses in the dead of winter when nothing is supposed to grow.
The Aztec culture had prophecies about the Flower World where great leaders would go when they died - their concept of Heaven. So when Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to lowly Juan Diego and filled his tilma with castilian roses, the Aztec people were amazed that Juan Diego had found Flower World. Mary fulfilled their prophecies by showing them the true God to worship - Jesus Christ.
Ten million indigenous people were converted to Jesus Christ through Our Lady of Guadalupe and is considered the single largest Christian conversion event in history.
