In this piece, Mary Magdalene is pictured at the site of her greatest despair - Jesus’ empty tomb. In her grief, she fails to recognize her savior when he appears…until he calls her by her name. The human soul can be described as a garden and Jesus is the Master Gardener. In the “tomb moments” of life, it can be difficult to see what is true and what is false. Our grief can keep us from seeing ourselves in the light of Jesus’ face and our identity can be shaken. But when he calls us by name, in a moment of surprising delight, we find that we are known by the Savior and the tomb becomes a garden of life.
